Flying into Cusco... What a View!

I realize that it is a little out of order to just now be writing about my flight into Cusco two weeks ago, but I came across the photos I took from the airplane and just had to share them!

Our flight left Lima at 7am in the morning (by the way, we spent the whole night in the Lima airport and I don't recommend it!). We flew over the beautiful Andes early in the morning and marveled at the breath-taking beauty of these incredible rugged mountains. I was amazed at the fierceness of the mountains and how they towered so greatly over the green valleys below. Because it is the wet season, the areas of (relatively) low elevation are lush and green and contrast starkly against the jagged peaks of the mountains.

Given that I am from Colorado, I am used to seeing beautiful, tall mountains, but the mountains around Cusco would make my lovely Rocky Mountains look like little hills. In Colorado, we boast about our 55 fourteeners  and the tallest, Mt. Elbert, stands an impressive 14,433 feet above sea level. Here in the Peruvian Andes, they can boast about their 37 peaks that stand above 6,000 meters, which is about 19,700 feet! The tallest peak in Peru is Huascaran Sur with a height of 6,768 meters, which is 22,200 feet tall! Wow! I can't imagine trying to breath at the top of that mountain!

Here are a few of the many photos I snapped while my eyes were glued to the window of the plane, taking in the outstanding views.

We also had a beautiful view of the city as we flew into Cusco. I am thankful that the skies were clear enough to see everything instead of cloudy and rainy so that we were able to take in these incredible sights!

All Moved In!

After 24 hours of travelling last Saturday, my dad and I finally made it to Cusco!
We spent a week travelling and site seeing before I had to move in with my host family and begin my volunteer program. During our awesome week together, we saw many of the incredible Incan ruins in the Sacred Valley and the surrounding areas, including Machu Picchu! We were fortunate enough to have a driver and a guide to help us navigate around the area and discover the great secrets of this beautiful land.

During my week with my dad, I got to ...

Feed llamas and alpacas...

Learn how the beautiful woven textiles from alpaca wool and natural dyes were made...

Admire the Incan architecture at sites like Ollantaytambo, Pisac, and Pikillacta...

Enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the terraces and water canals of Tipon...

Pretend to be archaeologists searching for tiny pieces of ancient pottery (we even found some!)...

Visit local markets and try many new, incredibly delicious fruits...

Discover the great methods used to harvest salt from pools fed by a very tiny, very salty stream in Maras...

Marvel at the agricultural ingenuity of the Incans as they used concentric circular terraces to create micro-climates and allow plants from different areas to adapt to the climate here...

(and befriend our guide Juan Carlos and our driver Samuel!)

Eat an assortment of delicious Peruvian cuisine such as lomo saltado (like beef tenderloin) and alpaca steak...

Sample a few Peruvian drinks such as chicha, which is a traditional beer brewed from corn (it was gross!)...

Take the train through the Peruvian mountains to the town Aguascalientes in order to visit Machu Picchu...

Marvel at the incredible beauty of the flowers and landscapes of the cloud forests of Aguascalientes...

Wait in a VERY long line for nearly 2 hours to get on the bus to go up the mountain to Machu Picchu...

And finally made it to the top and got to explore the wonders of this ancient Incan city...

I had a wonderful week together with my dad and I am so thankful that I have been given this amazing opportunity to see such a beautiful part of the world. It was hard to say goodbye to my friends and family back home and to my dad when he headed back to the states on Saturday, but it is absolutely worth it in order to be able to meet these amazing people, see their amazing country, and become Peruvian at heart.

Hola!
Thanks for checking out my blog! I will be posting here occasionally about my experiences studying abroad in Cusco, Peru. I am leaving Colorado tomorrow morning to embark on this great adventure!
In Peru I will be living in Cusco for four and a half months with a Peruvian host family. Cusco is located in the Andes mountain range at an elevation of 11,200 feet (for a little perspective, the elevation of Vail, Colorado is 8,150 feet!). Cusco is close to Machu Picchu, beautiful Incan ruins in the mountains, and I am very excited to visit!!
That's all for now; check back soon to hear about what I've been up to!
